On a cold and snowy afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell in double overtime to Ohio State by a 1-0 score. The Buckeyes scored in the 107th minute to drop Minnesota to 6-9-1 overall and 1-8-0 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers are mired in a six-match winless streak and have lost eight of their last 10 matches.
Minnesota was thoroughly out-played by Ohio State for the majority of the match, but the Buckeyes had nothing to show for their effort on the scoreboard. Ohio State out-shot the Maroon and Gold 19-3 in regulation, including a 13-1 shots-on-goal differential. Minnesota goalkeeper Karli Kopietz made 12 saves in regulation before coming out of the game late in the second half with a knee injury.
Sophomore Marni Prall replaced Kopietz in net and maintained the scoreless tie into the second overtime. The Buckeyes (6-8-1, 4-4-1) out-shot the Golden Gophers 11-1 in the two overtime periods.
At 106:44, defender Jen Miller fired a free kick from the middle of the Minnesota zone and beat Prall to the high right side. The unassisted goal was Miller's third of the season. The win improved OSU's chances of qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament and eliminated Minnesota from postseason play.
Emily Haynam picked up the win for OSU while Prall saw her record fall to 0-2-1 on the season. The Golden Gophers will close out the conference season next weekend with their worst Big Ten record in program history. Minnesota's four-match losing streak ties the school record set last season.
The Golden Gophers face arch-rival Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium to close out the 2002 conference season. Minnesota then hosts Drake on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m.
