The University of Minnesota women's soccer team dropped its fourth match this season by a 1-0 score, losing at Iowa tonight to fall to 6-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes won their first conference game of the year to move to 6-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Big Ten.
The Golden Gophers out-shot Iowa 9-7 for the match, but the Hawkeyes supplied the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in the first half. Courtney Wilkerson received a pass from Katie Clymer and Sarah Lynch before netting the goal past Minnesota goalkeeper Karli Kopietz. Kopietz, battling a knee injury suffered in Minnesota's win over Michigan, saw her record drop to 6-5-0 on the season. Sophomore Marni Prall relieved Kopietz in the second half and made one save.
In the second half, the Hawkeyes played defensive soccer to maintain their one-goal lead. The Golden Gophers outshot Iowa 6-3 in the half, but could not solve Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele. Vogele recorded four saves in the game, and notched her fourth shutout of the season. It was another hard-fought Big Ten match with Iowa tallying 21 fouls to Minnesota's 12.
The Golden Gophers continue their road trip with a match against Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m., in Champaign, Ill.
