Wrestlers Osborn and McAlpine Capture Bison Open Titles

Quincy Osborn and Thomas McAlpine captured individual titles today at the 33rd annual Bison Open, hosted by North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D. Minnesota's non- starters competed in the event which features several Division II, Division II and NAIA schools. All of Minnesota's freshmen wrestled unattached in the tournament.

In addition to the two titles won, the Maroon and Gold had seven placewinners, beginning with Andrew Domingues at 125 pounds. Domingues took third place in his first collegiate event, going 3-1. He defeated Aaron Hartwell of Mary, 5-3, in the third-place match. The Golden Gophers picked up their first title at 133 pounds as Osborn downed Nick Magee of NDSU, 6-4 in the championship bout. Willy Holst placed third, defeating Eric Satterstrom of NDSU, 2-1, in sudden victory overtime in the third-place match.

At 141 pounds, Danny Williams picked up fifth place with a 12-2 major decision win over Eric Fiedler of Ridgewater College. Minnesota won its second championship at 149 pounds as McAlpine went 3-0 and beat Mary's Mike Champagne, 5-1, in the title bout. Casey Flaherty earned fourth place at 174 pounds, falling to Dallas Heid of Mary in the third-place match. He went 3-2 for the tournament.

At 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore Eli Ross took second place, losing to NDSU's Brian Kraemer, 2-1, in the championship bout. Chad Mentel finished in third place, downing Josh Janousek of Ridgeweater, 3-1. Finally, true freshman heavyweight Cole Konrad captured third place with a 5-0 win over Dustin Benz of NDSU in the third-place match.

The Golden Gophers are next in action with the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Saturday, Nov. 23. Minnesota continues its dual meet season on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Norhern Illinois at 2 p.m.
