Buergis, Vladea and Havelkova Fall in Semifinals at Midwest Blast

BIn the second day of competition at the Midwest Blast in Champaign, Ill., the Minnesota women's tennis team saw junior Angela Buergis lose in the semifinals of main draw singles competition. The doubles pair of seniors Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova did the same in the main draw of doubles play.

Buergis defeated Jamie Wong of Georgia Tech 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the quarterfinals. She then faced Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State in the semifinals and lost 4-6, 4-6.

In other singles action, Havelkova defeated Shelby Lipson of Illinois State 6-2, 6-0 to put her up against fellow Gopher Brandi Watts in consolaton quarterfinals. Havelkova swept Watts 6-3, 6-3 and will face Vladea in the semifinals. Vladea defeated both Ashley Maxwell (ISU) and Leila Cehajic (ILL) in straight sets to put her into the semifinals. Freshman Nischela Reddy earned two wins to place her in the semifinals of consolation play where she will face Annelies Schenk of Georgia Tech tomorrow.

In doubles play, Vladea and Havelkova earned a quarterfinal win over Cehajic/Knue of Illinois 8-2. They then lost 4-8 in semis to Wong/Morris of Georgia Tech.

The tournament concludes on Sunday.
