Minnesota Runs Well At Northern Iowa Classic

NorthernIn its first away meet of the season, the Minnesota Men's track and field team traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete against Iowa State, Drake, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Northern Iowa in the Northern Iowa Classic. They turned in a solid effort as they grabbed five first and five second place finishes.

Leading the way for the Golden Gophers was freshman sensation Robb Merritt. Already running the third fastest 60 and 200-meter times in school history, Merritt continued his success in those events. He won the 200 meters in a time of 21.90 seconds and took second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.88 seconds.

Also claiming first place finishes were freshman Ryan Ford in the 1000 meters (2:28.72), freshman Kevin Netzer in the high jump (6-8 3/4), sophomore Lynden Reder in the weight throw (59-2) and the 4x400 relay team which remained unbeaten for the season (3:18.94).

Second place finishers included senior Bob Quade in the 600 meters (1:21.42), junior Andrew McKessock in the 3000 meters (8:23.93), freshman Joronne Williamson in the 60-meter hurdles (8.01) and freshman Karl Erickson in the shot put (53-6 1/2).

Minnesota will next be in action on February 8-9 when the travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Cyclone Classic.
