9-1Raleigh, N.C. - With a 4-1 victory over Virginia, the Minnesota Golden Gophers moved to the semifinals of the Triangle Softball Classic, in Raleigh, N.C., this afternoon. Minnesota, which moved to 9-1 on the season, will take on Tennessee Sunday morning at 10 a.m. EST. Illinois and North Carolina will square off in the other semifinal with the survivors advancing to the 2 p.m. championship game.

Coming off a no-hitter versus Boston, Piper Marten upped her record to 7-0 on the season pitching five innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out four. Angie Recknor came on to pitch the final two innings for her first save of the season, while striking out two and not allowing a hit.

After Marten gave up just her second run of the season in the first inning, rookie Stephanie Sward led off the bottom of the frame with a single. With two outs, Shelley Nichols hit a smash to Cavalier Ruby Rojas at third base, which was misplayed. Sward scored on the play to tie the game.

Minnesota took the lead in the third when Sward once again led off the inning with a single. Tammi Hays followed with another single before Nichols lifted a one-out sacrifice fly to score Sward, for the 2-1 lead. The Golden Gophers added two more runs in the sixth with RBI's from Hailee Nanchy and Sward.
