Gophers Win Triangle Softball Classic

Angie Recknor was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Piper Marten and Jordanne Nygren joined Recknor on the all-tournament team.

Recknor was 2-0, with a save during the tournament, while batting a team-leading .400 with a double and two RBI. She did not allow an earned run, while the Minnesota pitching staff allowed just three runs total in five games holding opposing batters to a .119 batting average posting a team earned run average of 0.40.

Minnesota downed the Lady Vols, 2-1 in the semifinal with Marten upping her record to 8-0 on the season, while striking out 11. Marten was 3-0 during the tournament, striking out a staggering 31 batters in 19 innings with a 0.74 ERA. Anne Thul hit her third home run of the season in the second inning, while Recknor drove in Veronica Roberts in the fifth for the Golden Gophers' runs.

In the championship, Recknor pitched five scoreless innings to up her season mark to 3-1, while Minnesota exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, cruising to the 7-0 victory over the Tar Heels. Shelly Nichols and Roberts both drove in two RBI, while Thul, Nygren and Tammi Hays each recorded an RBI. Nichols also scored twice, while Hays was 2- for-4.

The Gophers will next be in action March 1-3, when they travel to the Worth Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
