Men's Gymnastics Finishes Fourth At Big Ten Championships

PThe Minnesota men's gymnastics team finished fourth at the 2002 Big Ten Championships at the Sports Pavilion. The fourth place finish is the best by the Golden Gophers since the 1997 Championships when they took fourth. Junior Clay Strother took third place in the all-around competition to lead Minnesota. Ohio State claimed the team title for the second straight year with 218.100 points, followed by Michigan and Penn State. The individual event finals will be held tomorrow night at the Sports Pavilion.

The highlight for the evening came on the vault, where the Golden Gophers posted the top team score of 37.675. Strother and Eric Steele each posted scores of 9.525 to lead the team. The Golden Gophers were also strong on the floor exercise, posting the second-best score of the day with a 36.625, led by Guillermo Alvarez, who posted a 9.550.

Ohio State's Raj Bhavasar claimed the all- around title with a score of 56.000, followed by Penn State's Kevin Donahue with 54.525 and Strother at 54.375. Freshman Guillermo Alvarez finished fifth (53.250) while Tim Koehler was 13th (50.050). Rounding out the all-around competitors for Minnesota were Eric Steele in 14th (49.900) and Bill Callahan in 16th (49.700).

Numerous Golden Gophers qualified for the event finals tomorrow evening. Three Minnesota vaulters (Steele, Koehler, Strother) qualified in the vault.
