Steele Wins Vault Title At Big Ten Championships

thisSophomore Eric Steele won the individual vault title this evening at the Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships for the second straight year. Steele scored a 9.425 to edge Penn State's Kevin Donohue, who scored a 9.4125. Steele is Minnesota's first back-to-back Big Ten individual event champion since John Roethlisberger won the parallel bars in 1991 and 1992.

Guillermo Alvarez was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, after finishing fifth in the all-around on Friday night and taking second on the floor exercise. Steele was the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Clay Strother placed second on the horizontal bar with a 9.100 and third on the vault with a score of 9.300. Tim Koehler finished eighth on the vault (9.1125).

Ohio State's Raj Bhavsar won the floor exercise (9.4875) and tied for the pommel horse crown with Michigan's Jamie Hertza (9.400). Penn State's Kevin Tan claimed the rings title (9.600) while PSU's Kevin Donohue won the parallel bars (9.125) and the horizontal bar (9.4375) titles. Bhavsar was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and OSU head coach Miles Avery won the Coach of the Year award.

Minnesota heads to the NCAA Championships, April 4-6 at Oklahoma.
