bRain spoiled Minnesota's Big Ten Conference opener against Michigan State Friday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich. The Golden Gophers and the Spartans battled the weather for the first three innings, but Mother Nature had the final say. After a one hour and five minute rain delay, play was officially suspended until tomorrow morning.
Minnesota did manage a run in the top of the second inning, when junior Scott Welch lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring senior Jason Kennedy. Sophomore righthander Craig Molldrem allowed just three Spartan hits in the first three frames.
Play is scheduled to resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CDT. Minnesota will take a 1-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning. Once game one of the series is completed, the two teams will attempt to play two seven-inning contests, as scheduled. The series would then conclude Sunday afternoon with a nine-inning game four. If all three games are not finished tomorrow, a seven-inning double-header will be played on Sunday.
