No. 24 Gophers Drop Game To Illinois, Split Series

IlliniIllinois scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to defeat No. 24 Minnesota, 2-0, in the second game of a two-game Big Ten softball series at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Minn. The Illini even their Big Ten record at 1-1 and improve to 17-12 overall, while the Gophers fall to 24-11 for the season, 1-1 in the Big Ten.

Illinois left fielder Erin Montgomery led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her first home run of the season to give the Illini a 1-0 lead. Montgomery singled in Lindsey Hamma in the sixth inning to account for Illinois' other run.

Sherri Taylor retired 15 consecutive Gophers at one point and pitched a complete-game three-hitter to earn her eighth win of the season. Gopher starter Piper Marten allowed both runs and dropped to 15-7. Minnesota's Jordanne Nygren had two of the Gophers' three hits in the game. Minnesota had runners at second and third with one out in the second inning, but failed to score.

Minnesota will play Purdue in a Big Ten doubleheader Sunday at 12 noon, again at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Minn. The field at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium is not playable this weekend.
