Ann Arbor, Mich. - The 12th-ranked Michigan Wolverines avenged a 7-0 loss earlier this season to Minnesota by pummeling the Golden Gophers 11-1, in five innings, Friday afternoon. The Gophers fell to 26-14 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten Conference, while Michigan upped its mark to 30-7, 6-1 in the league.

Michigan's Marissa Young (17-5), who gave up six runs on seven hits in her previous meeting with Minnesota, limited the Gophers to just one hit, a Tammi Hays single in the third inning. Hays would later score an unearned run for the Gophers, after stealing her 14th base of the season. The senior from Hastings, Minn., is now tied for second in school history with Steph Midthun (1996-99) with 75 career stolen bases, just six behind Mischel Dorr's (1990-93) record.

The Wolverines jumped out early, scoring nine runs in the first two innings, including seven off Minnesota starting pitcher Angie Recknor (9-6). Minnesota had allowed just 12 runs all season in the first two innings of contests, and just three in the second frame. Recknor had thrown a complete-game three-hitter on March 10 against Michigan, during the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.

The 11 runs and 11 hits Michigan posted were both season highs for Gopher opponents as Minnesota dropped its third straight game. Gopher opponents have 21 hits in their last two games after Ohio State had 10 last Sunday. Gold Country will try to get back on track tomorrow, when Minnesota will once again face Michigan, at 2 p.m. EST. The Gophers will then travel to Michigan State for a noon doubleheader, Sunday.
