elig Junior center Jeff Taffe has decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and has signed a professional contract with the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL).

"Although we are disappointed, we are very happy for Jeff," Golden Gopher Head Coach Don Lucia said. "I know getting a chance to play in the NHL has been a lifelong dream for him. He has worked extremely hard the past three years and was a big reason why we were able to win the national championship this season."

"I have had a great experience at the University of Minnesota, but I'm looking forward to this new opportunity," Taffe said. "I want to thank Coach Lucia, his staff and all of my teammates for all of their help and encouragement during my time with the Golden Gophers. We shared a special experience last season, and I know they will continue to have success in the future."

Taffe had a breakout season in 2001-02 as he finished second in the nation in goals with 34 and fifth overall with 58 points. He was a third-team All-WCHA selection and finished tied for the national lead with teammate John Pohl with 14 power-play goals. Improving his offensive production in each of his three seasons, Taffe finished his collegiate career with 56 goals, 57 assists and 113 points in 120 games. He also had 14 career game-winning goals, including one each in Minnesota's NCAA quarterfinal and semifinal wins this past season.

"I know Jeff will make the University of Minnesota proud as he begins his professional career," Lucia said. "We wish him nothing but the best and thank him for his contributions to this program."
