Gopher Women's Tennis Closes Out 2001-02 Season

t The University of Minnesota women's tennis team closed its 2001-02 season, dropping a 4-1 decision to Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Championships, hosted by the University of Indiana. The Gophers finish the 2001-02 season 6-16 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Minnesota fell in the doubles point when sixth-seed Michigan won the No. 2 and No. 3 Doubles. The Gophers abandoned the No. 1 Doubles competition because of the two Wolverine wins. Minnesota also abandoned both the No. 4 and No. 5 singles, while Michigan won the No. 2, 3 and No. 6 Singles competition.

The Golden Gophers gained a point when Valerie Vladea defeated Michigan's Kavitha Tipirneni, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, earning the No. 1 Singles mark. It was the second time this season that Vladea defeated Tipirneni this year, back on March 17. Vladea, a sophomore, finished the season with a spring record of 14-5, 8-2 in conference play. Of her 14 wins, eight came at the No. 1 spot. In just two seasons, Vladea has 12 league wins. Vladea, a All-Big Ten selection last season, holds an overall record of 25-16 in singles competition, 26-12 in doubles.

It was the final match for seniors Andrea Rose and Jennifer Howard. Howard finished her career with a 51-41 doubles record, while Rose had 16 doubles victories.
