Minnesota's Piper Marten and DePaul's Lindsay Chouinard were pitted in a tremendous pitching dual. Marten struckout 11 batters to up her school record total to 302 this season. It was also the highest strikeout total by a Golden Gopher pitcher in a NCAA game, surpassing Steph Klaviter's total of 10 in 1999.
Marten did not allow a hit until two outs in the sixth inning, while Chouinard held Minnesota to just four hits though six innings. Chouinard, the 2002 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, struckout ten.
The two pitchers combined to throw 318 pitches during the longest regional game for both teams.
The Gophers threatened in the ninth inning. With Anne Thul at second and two outs, Angie Recknor singled to leftfield. The Blue Devils' Liz Bouck came up firing and pegged Thul at the plate.
"We are very dissapointed," said co-head coach Lisa Berstein said. "We couldn't get the job done and we need to take care of it tomorrow. It was frustrating and we had many opportunities that we didn't capitalize on."
Minnesota's record falls to 38-20 as DePaul moves to 48-9 on the season. The Gophers could play Arizona on Saturday at 2:30 p.m or have a bye if Penn State loses against the Wildcats. DePaul will face either Penn State or Arizona in Saturday's game nine at 5 p.m.
