Gopher Women Selected to Compete at Track and Field Championships

inThree University of Minnesota women's track and field athletes were selected today by the NCAA to compete in the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. on May 29-June 1.

All-American Tahesia Harrigan, who earlier this week was, selected the 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, qualified in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The British Virgin Islands native goes into the meet with the ninth-best 100-meter dash time and the 20th-best 200-meter dash time in the nation. Harrigan is the highest-ranking first-year athlete in the 100 and the only track and field newcomer to make the 200 cut.

In her first season with the Gophers, Barbora Spotakova heads to nationals as Minnesota's only automatic qualifier. Spotakova threw the javelin 178-feet, 6-inches at the Big Ten Championships to automatically qualify for nationals, heading into the competition ranked as the fifth-best thrower in the nation. Spotakova also qualified in the heptathlon after becoming Minnesota's first heptathlon Big Ten champion. She holds the tenth-best score in the nation.

Selected to her first NCAA Championships, junior Shani Marks goes into the meet ranked 14th in the triple jump. Marks, a two-time Big Ten Champion and Apple Valley, Minn. native, placed third in the triple jump at this year's outdoor Big Ten meet and second at the indoor meet.
