Golden Gopher Women's Basketball Honored at Lynx Game

The Minnesota Lynx honored the 2001-02 University of Minnesota women's basketball team as part of the annual Honoring Our Legacy celebration at the Lynx' season-opener at the Target Center in Minneapolis on May 25. Minnesota's four high school girls championship teams were also honored.

The Golden Gophers were recognized at halftime of the Lynx game versus the Utah Starzz. After several minutes of highlights from the 2001-02 season were shown, the Gophers received a standing ovation from the crowd of 11,481 in attendance as they were honored at halfcourt. The completion of the spring semester a week prior to the celebration resulted in several players being unable to attend the celebration but representing the Gopher squad which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 18 in the nation were Kim Bell, Lindsay Lieser, Lindsay Whalen, Ebba Hemberg and Tanisha Gilbert.

Following the team recognition, basketball fans of the state of Minnesota were introduced to new Gopher head basketball coach Pam Borton Coach Borton was welcomed by Lynx mascot Prowl and was given a Lynx jersey.

This is the fourth season for the Lynx' Honoring Our Legacy celebration. Past celebrations paid tribute to people who have made significant contributions to women's athletics, both in and out of the athletic arena, in Minnesota. Several Golden Gophers have been honored in past Honoring Our Legacy celebrations, including former basketball players Denise Erstad Falls, Linda Roberts, Lea Olsen and Carol Ann Shudlick.
