Mason, who is entering his sixth year as coach of the Gophers, led the team to its first bowl game in 13 years with an appearance in the 1999 Sun Bowl. He became only the second coach in Minnesota history to lead the Gophers to back-to-back bowl games when Minnesota was selected to the Micronpc.com Bowl the following season. Mason joined Murray Warmath as the only two coaches in Minnesota history to take their teams to bowl games in back-to-back seasons.
Joining Mason on the top-five list of most underrated coaches is Mississippi's David Cutcliffe, Southern Mississippi's Jeff Bower, Iowa State's Dan McCarney and Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer.
