The University of Minnesota women's soccer team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end this evening in West Lafayette, Ind., by the narrowest of margins as 20th-ranked Purdue edged the Golden Gophers, 1-0. Forward Annette Kent's goal in the ninth minute of the Big Ten opener was the difference in a foul-plagued, defensive struggle. The match was played in dreadful weather conditions, with heavy rain leaving three to four inches of water on most of the field. Rain continued during the game, making the pitch an extremely sloppy place to play a Big Ten soccer match.
The Golden Gophers dropped to 5-2-0 overall on the season (0-1-0 Big Ten) despite out-shooting the Boilermakers 10-5, including a 4-2 shots-on-goal advantage. Minnesota's offensive standout, forward Rachael Roth, was held without a shot for the game, marking the first time in five games that the Wayzata, Minn., native was held scoreless. Junior midfielder Amanda McMahon and freshman forward Hilary Stowell each tallied four shots to lead the Maroon and Gold.
Purdue goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier earned the shutout, making four saves, while Minnesota keeper Karli Kopietz saw her record fall to 5- 2 on the year.
For the match, the teams combined for 38 fouls, 23 of which going to the Boilermakers (5-1-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten). Purdue outpaced the Golden Gophers on corner kicks, 6-3.
Minnesota continues its weekend in the Hoosier state with a match against Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1:30 p.m., in Bloomington, Ind. The Golden Gophers return home next weekend to host Michigan State and Michigan at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Field.
