No. 8 Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep Dropping Michigan 3-0

Minnesota claimed game one against Michigan 30-26. With the score tied at 26, the Golden Gophers scored the last four points to close out the game. Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded half of Minnesota's kills with seven while hitting .700. Lindsey Vander Well(Prinsburg, Minn.) added 10 assists and Paula Gentil (Fortaleza Ceara', Brazil) had with five digs. The game featured 11 ties with Minnesota held Michigan to .054 hitting percentage.
With Michigan leading 19-16, the Golden Gophers used a 14-4 run to take the game 30-23 win in game two. Busse led the charge again with three blocks and three kills in a decisive Minnesota rally.Trisha Bratford (Reseda, Calif.) came off the bench with five kills for the Golden Gophers.
In game three, Minnesota held off a late Michigan rally to win 31- 29. The Golden Gophers fought back from a five-point deficit with the score at 17-12 and took the lead 24-23. Minnesota also fought off game point at 29-28 to take the match.
Busse led the way for the Golden Gophers with 16 kills while boasting a .448 hitting percentage. Erin Martin (Ames, Iowa) added nine kills and three service aces, while Bratford closed the match with eight kills. Gentil recorded 14 digs, while Vander Well recorded 36 assists and seven digs.
Minnesota outhit the Wolverines 46-38 and outblocked them 14-11. With the win, it marks the first time the Golden Gophers swept their Big Ten opponents 3-0 in both matches.
"It's safe to say that we didn't play as well as we did last night," said Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert. "It was a different game. Our serving was off, we didn't pass as well. However, just like we have done all year our team battled back in crucial situations."
Michigan was led by Erin Moore and Nicole Poquette who had nine kills each. Lisa Gamalski had 28 assists and nine digs on the match.
Minnesota will continue Big Ten Conference play on the road next Friday, Oct 4, against Wisconsin at 7 p.m.
