The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team returned to its winning ways, defeating New Hampshire, 4-0 today at Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. The Gophers are raised their overall record to 18-3- 1, while dropping the Wildcats to 18-4-1.UNH is ranked fourth in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll and fifth in the USCHO poll.

The Gophers got on the board early when Winny Brodt scored a goal at the 5:03 mark of the first period. Brodt scored her eighth goal of the season, her second goal of the weekend. Brodt and Kelsey Bills paired for a two-on-one opportunity with Bills passing the puck to Brodt in front of the crease. It was the first time Brodt scored a point against her former team, since transferring from UNH in the 1998-99 season. The Wildcats had a five-on-three opportunity in the first period for 1:28, but Minnesota was able to hold off UNH. The Wildcats did not get a shot on goal during that time. Minnesota was outshooting UNH 12-6 in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Gophers added an additional goal at 19:23 in the second period on a power-play opportunity, putting the game at a two-goal deficit. Kelly Stephens scored her 14th goal of the season with Krissy Wendell and Winny Brodt setting up the power play goal.

The Gophers tacked on another power-play goal at 7:29 in the third stanza when Wendell scored her 21st goal of the season, fifth on the power-play. Natalie Darwitz set up the play tallying her 25th assist of the season, 45 point. Ronda Curtin added a goal of her own, her seventh of the season, with Melissa Coulombe and La Toya Clarke on the assists. Darwitz looked as if she would tally a power-play goal of her own, but the goal was waived off because of a player in the crease.

Minnesota was 2-5 on the power play, while holding UNH scoreless in seven opportunities and allowed only one power-play shot on goal. Minnesota scored five of its seven goals this weekend on the power play. Minnesota was 3-3 with the extra attacker in the 6-3 loss to Dartmouth yesterday.

By the end of the game, the Gophers had 34 shots on goal and held UNH to 19. New Hampshire's Jen Huggon had 30 saves in the game.

Jody Horak was in goal for the Gophers, gaining her third shutout of the year. Horak now moves to 15-2-0 on the season, 28-4-2 overall. In 34 games played in her Gopher career, Horak has only lost four times.
