Men's Basketball Topples Northwestern With 74-57 Win

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team (10-6, 2-3) defeated Northwestern University (8-8, 0-5) 74-57 today in Williams Arena. Minnesota completed a 12-0 run at 13:09 to seal the win and hand Northwestern their fifth loss in the Big Ten.
Jerry Holman had his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Holman got the crowd roaring with his 16th dunk of the season at the 3:37 point in the second half. Maurice Hargrow added 19 points and four rebounds while Kevin Burleson had 16 points and six assists.
In the first half, the Golden Gophers were able to hold the Wildcats to 28.6 percent field goal shooting. The Maroon and Gold did not allow Northwestern a field goal for up to five minutes on three different occassions in the half. Yet, with Minnesota committing nine turnovers in the half, Northwestern was able to claim 10 points off turnovers and finish the half within five points.
Burleson the offensive key for Minnesota in the first half. Burleson went 4-of-5 from the field with three three-pointers and 11 points. Defensively, Minnesota was powered by Rickert and Burleson who each contributed two blocks to give the Gophers seven total blocks at the half. The Golden Gophers finished the game with nine blocks.
Aaron Jennings led the Wildcats with 16 points and eight rebounds. While Evan Seacat, Mahomed Hachad and Jason Burke each had nine points.
Next up, Minnesota travels to Penn State on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in State College, Pa.
