Nelson is a 6-3 middle blocker from St. Croix High School in St. Croix Falls, Wis. She was named to the All-State Team as a senior, and has been named All-Conference in each of the four seasons she has lettered at St. Croix High School. Nelson has also been the team captain in both her junior and senior years and has been named the Team MVP in each of her four seasons at St. Croix High School.
She was selected as the 10th best high school senior in the nation on the Student Sports "Hot 100" list. Nelson was an AAU All-American in 2002, and competes with the Kaepa Northern Lights Volleyball Club. She was also named All-Conference twice for St. Croix High School in basketball and softball. Nelson is also a member of the National Honors Society.
"We won a very close battle with Stanford University to land Meredith (Nelson)," said Hebert. "She is an outstanding student athlete and brings size and elite athletic ability to the middle blocker position. Meredith (Nelson) will be a star at Minnesota."
Nelson joins Kelly Bowman to make up Minnesota's 2003 recruiting class. The addition of Nelson gives the Golden Gophers two players who were ranked in the Student Sports "Hot 100" list.
"With the recruitment of Meredith (Nelson), along with Kelly (Bowman) we have reeled in two top prospects in the area. Meredith is from St. Croix Falls, Wis., but her home is only 45 minutes from campus and we have bestowed upon her the distinction of being and honorary Minnesotan. Any way you look at it, Meredith will be a Gopher and we are thrilled to welcome her to our program."
