Gopher Rowing Finishes Strong at the Head of the Rock

The course was 2.75 miles long and the regatta had over 40 events. In just the three events that the Gophers competed in, there were over 109 entries.
Minnesota's second-place Varsity Eight shell consisted of coxswain Katherine Nelson, Jackie Gagner at stroke, Jill Peters, Erika Bartkute, Beth Ratterman, Heidi Rose, Melissa Roche, Katie Biese and Andrea Pierce at the bow position. The boat finished with a time of 16:21.8, just 5.1 seconds behind Wisconsin's winning boat. There were 37 entries in the race.
Minnesota B boat finished fifth overall in the Varsity Eight event with a time of 16:58.9. The Maroon and Gold B boat had Annie Alwin as the coxswain, Jenna Buskohl at stroke, Mariel Gartner, Catilin Dowden, Sarah Reed, Sam Wangsgard, Meghan Johnson, Lida Storch and Colleen Brown at bow.
In Varsity Four action, the Gophers' B boat of coxswain Leah Gross, Shelby Williams, Cheryl Wick, Brown and Storch, claimed second place with a time of 18:13.6. Wisconsin came in first with a time of 18:07.4. Minnesota A boat came in third clocking a time of 18:31.6. The third-place shell had Kristi Branigan as the coxswain, Gagner, Peters, Rose and Ratterman. Minnesota C boat finished 17th with a time of 19:42.21 respectively.
The Gophers claimed the top spot in novice action with a time of 18:22.4. Minnesota's winning boat had Katy Westrom as the coxswain, Megan Goodman at stroke, Julia Herman, Kiira Siitari, Meredith Thompson, Berit Tomten, Ashley Hendrickson, Laura Muskatevc and Sally Olson at bow. Minnesota B boat finished ninth in 19:37.1, while the C boat finished 14th with a time of 20:42.0
Minnesota will travel to Boston, Mass., to compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, Oct. 18-19. The Head of the Charles is the largest rowing regatta in the world. The Gophers will compete in the Championship 8+ race, which had 50 entries in the event.
