GophThe No. 1 University of Minnesota women's hockey team earned a 7-0 shutout over Ohio State on its way to a Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep, in front of 1,258 fans at Ridder Arena. The Gophers earned four league points over the weekend and now sit at 2-0- 0.

Minnesota started slow in the first period with only one shot on goal until the 14-minute mark of the first. However, the Golden Gophers poured on the scoring after that. Krissy Wendell opened the game with a power-play goal at 14:37 of the first period. It was Wendell's fifth goal in two games. Natalie Darwitz started the play, passing it to Kelly Stephens. She fired a cross shot to Wendell who camped out at the doorstop for the goal. Stephens would add a goal of her own at 16:01, her first of the year. Minnesota scored the first goal with only two shots on net, while adding the second goal with four total shots. Becky Wacker finished the first period scoring tallying a goal at 19:14 with the assists going to Andrea Nichols and Wendell. It was Wacker's first goal as a Golden Gopher.

The Maroon and Gold added two goals in the second stanza. Darwitz netted her first goal of the season when she fired a wrist shot past OSU goalie Melissa Glaser at 11:46 of the second. La Toya Clarke netted her first goal of the night at 14:53 in the second. Freshman defenseman Lyndsay Wall and Stephens were each credited with an assist.

Minnesota topped off the night, notching another two goals in the third. Noelle Sutton scored at 10:15, while Clarke added a short- handed tally her second goal of the night at 19:43.

Wendell's lone goal in the first period would be all that junior goalie Jody Horak would need, stopping all 23 Buckeye shots on goal. In 48 career starts with the Golden Gophers, the netminder added her 10th shutout of her career. She stands at 39-8-2 as a member of the Maroon and Gold.

The Gophers head to Madison, Wis., to take on the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers, Oct. 25-26. Both games are scheduled for a 2:05 p.m. starts at the Kohl Center.
