itsThe Golden Gopher women's soccer team (5-4-1, 2-3-0) upset Northwestern (6-4-0, 2-2-0), 2-1, on Friday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Minnesota rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to record its second Big Ten win of the year, one more than the team had all of last season. The Golden Gophers will host Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Northwestern got on the board first following a Minnesota foul. Aileen Guiney's dead ball kick from outside the 18 yard box sailed over Gopher goalkeeper K arli Kopietz in the 12th minute.

The Golden Gophers responded with a flurry to finish out the first half. Just over three minutes after falling behind, freshman H aley Lentsch punched the ball up to B ecky Dellaria. Dellaria beat Wildcat goalkeeper Whitney Jones to the ball and kicked it past her and into the back of the net.

Tied at one, Minnesota took its first lead as senior A manda McMahon passed up to Lentsch. Her shot from the top of the box sailed high and deflected off the hand of the outstretched goalkeeper and into the goal in the 39th minute.

Northwestern had a golden opportunity in the second half on a rebound in front of the Minnesota net. The Wildcats' leading scorer Kristen Pearce was all alone to put home a rebound, but Minnesota defender Jen Cressman made the save with 20 minutes to play.

Northwestern kept the ball in the Minnesota zone for most of the last 20 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.

Kopietz led Minnesota to the win with four saves.

After recording four goals and one assist in her first five career matches, Lentsch broke a four-match scoreless streak with the first multi-point game of her career.
