Minnesota Wrestling Rated Third in Preseason Rankings

strThe University of Minnesota wrestling team is ranked third in TheWrestlingMall.com preseason team rankings. The Golden Gophers are coming off a three-year stretch in which they have captured three straight Big Ten Championships, two NCAA Championships and one NCAA runner-up finish.

Defending NCAA Champion Oklahoma State is the preseason number one pick, followed by Lehigh University. In all, five Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 10 and eight league teams are in the top 25. Illinois is ranked fifth, followed by No. 6 Iowa, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Penn State, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 22 Purdue and No. 25 Wisconsin.

Individually, defending NCAA Champion Damion Hahn is ranked number one at 197 pounds. Returning All-American Jacob Volkmann is ranked second at 165 pounds, while fellow All-American Bobbe Lowe is rated fifth at 125.

Also ranked for Minnesota are No. 13 Keri Stanley at 149, No. 13 Matt Nagel at 157, No. 16 Josh McLay at 174, No. 20 Jon Duncombe at 184 and No. 13 Cole Konrad at heavyweight.

Minnesota opens its 2003-04 season at the Harold Nichols Open in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Nov. 15.
