Women's Hockey Drops a 2-1 Decision to Wisconsin

CollegiatThe No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team fell to No. 6 Wisconsin tonight at the Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis. The Gophers drop to 25-5-1 overall and 18-4-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while the Badgers improve their record to 21-6-5 overall and 14-5-4 in the WCHA.

After a scoreless first period, both teams tacked on a goal for a 1-1 tie in the second period. Wisconsin's Kathy Devereaux took the first hit against the Gophers when she beat the corner and scored her eighth goal of the season at 9:09 in the second. The Gophers would collect a goal of their own at 16:01. Natalie Darwitz started the play when she beat the corner and took the shot. Wisconsin's goalie, Jackie MacMillian stopped Darwitz's shot, but could not stop the rebound shot from Kelly Stephens. It was her 17th goal of the season and Darwitz's 33rd assist for her first year as a Gopher.

The game would stay at a deadlock 1-1 tie until the Badgers' senior captain, Sis Paulsen scored at 9:25 in the third. Her shot from the point proved to be the game-winning goal and her seventh goal of the season.

The Gophers and Badgers both were 0-3 on the power-play and Minnesota had a one-shot advantage, set at 22-21.

Jody Horak was in net for the Golden Gophers, allowing two goals and stopping 19 Badger shots. It was Horak's fourth loss of the season, dropping her record to 21-4-0 and 34-6-2 in her career.

Minnesota will look for the series split against Wisconsin, tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The Maroon and Gold will then face Wisconsin for the third time in the WCHA Final Five tournament, March 6 at 4:05 p.m.
