Baseball Falls To Pro-Alumni 5-4

Ann The Minnesota baseball team fell to the Pro Alumni team 5-4 at the Metrodome on Monday, Feb 3 in the 12th Annual Pro Alumni Game. With the win the Pro Alumni team took a 7-4-1 lead in the all-time series.

Minnesota jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Scott Welch (Missoula, Mon.) doubled home three runs with the bases loaded off Pro-Alumni starter Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Minn). The varsity squad upped its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Jon Becker (Plato, Minn.) doubled home Welch.

The Pro Alumni squad narrowed the lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning when Denny Neagle grounded out into fielder's choice RBI to score Jack Hannahan, and J.T. Bruett came around to score on a throwing error.

With two outs and men on second and third in the sixth inning, Hannahan roped a double, to bring home Mark Merila and Jason Kennedy, and came around to score on a throwing error to put the Pro-Alumni up 5-4.

Nate Broehm ( Winona, Minn.) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh in relief to get the win, while Matt Loberg (Anoka, Minn.) pitched the final two scoreless innings to pick up the save. For the varsity squad Theis took the loss.

Welch led the way for the varsity squad going one for two with three RBI and a run. Ben Pattee (Ukiah, Calif.), Luke Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Jake Elder (Delta, British Columbia) also scored single runs for Minnesota. Gary Dick (Grand Rapids, Minn.) was the only player on either side with multiple hits, as he went two for three.

Senior righthander C.J. Woodrow (Plymouth, Minn.) and freshman lefthander Brian Bull (Omaha, Neb.) each pitched two innings of no- hit ball to start off the game for the varsity squad.

The Pro-Alumni team was led by Hannahan who was one for four with two runs and two RBI.

Minnesota will open the regular season when it travels to Tucson, Arizona to take on the Arizona Wildcats on Feb. 21-23. Start times for that series include 4 p.m. on Feb. 21, 3 p.m. on Feb. 22 and 1 p.m. on Feb. 23. The Golden Gophers will also play Oklahoma State on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.
