Baseball Defeats No. 14 Notre Dame 8-2

C. J. Woodrow (Maple Grove, Minn.) pitched a stellar six innings, with no earned runs and eight strikeouts, as Minnesota (3-3) defeated No. 14 Notre Dame (2-4) 8-2 on Saturday, March 1 in the second game of the Dairy Queen Baseball Classic. With the win the Golden Gophers moved to 1-1 in the Dairy Queen Classic, while Notre Dame fell to 0-2.
Woodrow who had a rough first outing against Arizona in his first outing of the year, retired Notre Dame's first 11 batters, before Javier Sanchez delivered a hit for the Fighting Irish. Woodrow continued his strong pitching, allowing only five baserunners in six innings to pick up the win and move to 1-1 on the season. Freshman lefthander Br ian Bull (Omaha, Neb.) pitched three innings of relief and gave up only one unearned run to pick up his first career save. Peter Ogilive took the loss for Notre Dame to drop to 0-2 on the season.
For the fourth time in its six games this season Minnesota got the scoring started in the first inning. Sa m Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. Two batters later Lu ke Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) brought Steidl home on an RBI groundout to put the Golden Gophers ahead 1-0.
Minnesota added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of RBI groundouts by Ga ry Dick (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Jo n Becker (Plato, Minn.) to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Appert drilled a two-run homer to right field to put the Golden Gophers up 5-0.
Notre Dame got on the board in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Matt Edwards to cut the score to 5-1. However, Minnesota came right back with a single run in the sixth when Da vid Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.) led off with a single and came around to score on a double play to make it 6-1.
The Fighting Irish made it 6-2 in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Matt Macri. Steidl added on to the Golden Gophers scoring with a one-out single that brought home Hrncirik and Dick to make it 8-2.
Minnesota was led by Hrncirik who was three for three with three runs and a stolen base in the game. Appert was two for five with a home run and three RBI. He has now had at least two hits in each of the Golden Gophers six games this season. Steidl was also two for three with two RBI and a stolen base.
Sanchez was two for four with a run for Notre Dame. Macri was one for three with an RBI.
No. 7 Wake Forest will take on No. 16 Nebraska in the second game of the night at 7 p.m. On Sunday, March 2 the Dairy Queen Baseball Classic will wrap up with Notre Dame taking on Wake Forest at 11 a.m. In the final game Minnesota will play Nebraska at 3 p.m. That game will be broadcast on KCCO (950 AM) and will also be webcast on gop
