The University of Minnesota baseball team (8-5) shut down the Pacific Tigers (16-8) for a 4-0 win Saturday. The victory gives Minnesota a 2- 0 record on their California road trip, and is their third win in a row.

The Golden Gophers had two commanding pitching performances to leave the Tigers scoreless. Senior starter C.J. Woodrow (Plymouth, Minn./Maple Grove) pitched for seven solid innings, allowing only one hit and a total of four baserunners while striking out 10. Woodrow was relieved by Brian Bull (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) who only allowed two hits in two innings while striking out one.

The Golden Gophers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first for the second straight game with right fielder Ben Pattee (Ukiah, Calif./Mendocino J.C.) reaching second on a double to left center. Pattee scored on the next at-bat when second baseman Luke Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park-Cottage Grove) hit his seventh double of the season.

Pattee led off the third inning with a single, followed by shortstop Scott Welch (Missoula, Mont./Loyola-Sacred Heart) reaching first with a single as well. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Pacific started James Stanford. Pattee then added Minnesota's second run on a balk by Stanford. Welch moved to third and came home on a double to left center by Andy Hunter (St. Paul, Minn./Sibley).

In the fifth, Pattee tallied Minnesota's final run when he hit a double to get on base, stole third and came home on a groundout by Welch. Overall Pattee was 3-for-5 with his three runs scored and Welch was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and sophomore Jake Elder (Delta, B.C./North Delta) also collected two hits on the day.

The Golden Gophers will complete their three-game series against the Pacific Tigers tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
