Baseball Falls Victim to San Jose State Ninth-Inning Rally

nowThe Minnesota baseball team (9-6) had its four-game winning streak snapped as San Jose State (13-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2 on Monday, Mar. 17. The Golden Gophers are now 3-1 on their California trip.

Ben Pattee (Ukiah, Calif.) gave Minnesota an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly that brought home Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.).

San Jose State evened the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Jon Heuerman scored on an error on a play where Anthony Contreras reached on an infield single.

The two teams did not score until the ninth inning when Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) singled home Scott Welch to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead. However, in the bottom of the ninth Heuerman would lead off with a single and come around to score two batters later on a Contreras RBI single to even the score at 2-2. After Contreras stole second and the next two batters reached to load the bases, Nick Guerra delivered a one-out single to give the Spartans the 3-2 victory.

Redshirt freshman Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Minn.) pitched six innings and gave up one unearned run, while striking out seven batters in the game. Freshman Brian Bull (Omaha, Neb.) gave up two runs in the ninth, pitching two and a third innings of relief, to drop to 2-1 on the season. Jose Amaya pitchd two innings of relief and picked up the win for San Jose State to move to 2-1.

Minnesota starting pitchers have only given up one earned run in the last three games, which includes a span of 19 innnings.

Steidl paced the offense by going three for four with an RBI on the night. Jon Becker (Plato, Minn.) and Tony Leseman were each two for three in the game.

Contreras led the way for San Jose State going four for five with two RBI and a run.

Minnesota will play its fifth game of the California road trip when it takes on Sacramento State on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 4 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also play the Hornets on Wednesday, Mar. 19 at 4 p.m.
