2003-0University of Minnesota women's hockey head coach Laura Halldorson has announced that Maggie Souba from Moorhead, Minn., has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Gophers for the 2003-04 season.

Souba, a defenseman, led the Moorhead High School Spuds to a 21-4-1 record in the 2002-03 season. As a senior, Souba was an all-state selection by the Associated Press (first team), the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Minnesota Girls Coaches Association. Souba played in 26 games, netting 30 goals and 16 assists for 46 points last season. She has also been named to the All-Greater Minnesota Conference team in back-to-back seasons in 2002 and 2003. Souba is also named as a candidate for the 2003 MHS Heisman Award, which is given to most outstanding female student-athlete at Moorhead High School.

As a junior Souba was a co-captain, who led the Spuds to a Section 8 AA championship and a sixth-place finish at the Minnesota State High School Tournament. Souba participated in the 2000 and 2001 USA Hockey Developmental Camps and was selected to play in the Minnesota Selects Tournament in 2001 and 2002.

"It's great to add a player like Maggie to our team," Halldorson said. "She has played both defense and forward in the past, so she'll give us some versatility. She's a hard worker who will do well both on the ice and in the classroom."
