Golden Gopher Softball Announces 2003 Team Awards

AssistThe University of Minnesota softball team announced its awards for the 2003 season tonight in the club room at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. Co-Head Coaches Lisa Bernstein and Julie Standering, and Assistant Coach Jenn Stokes presented the awards to the squad which qualified for its first Big Ten Tournament since 1999 and second consecutive NCAA Tournament.

Junior pitcher Piper Marten was named the Most Valuable Player by the coaches, and senior catcher Anne Thul was named the Most Valued Player by her peers. A full list of the 2003 team awards is below.

The 2003 edition of Minnesota Softball posted a 37-21-1 overall record and a 12-8 mark in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers finished fifth in the conference and had two players - Marten and senior third baseman Jordanne Nygren - named to All-Big Ten. The Maroon and Gold advanced to the NCAA Regional in Tucson, Ariz., going 1-2 for its second consecutive appearance at the national tournament.
