Developed by the Women's Sports Foundation, GoGirlGo is a summer enrichment program targeting inner-city girls age 10-14. MN Thunder P.L.U.S. combines soccer training and competition with the "GoGirls Guide to Life" - a curriculum in which champion female athletes deliver messages on self-esteem, fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. Under the guidance of female program leaders, these stories provide the basis for discussions during the season and give girls the courage to make informed, healthy life choices.
The GoGirlGo Festival recognizes the commitment of these girls by connecting them to some of the brightest soccer talent in the entire state. This year's event will include small-sided games, fun skills challenges, a tour of Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium and pictures with the University of Minnesota women's soccer players.
"I want to thank Head Coach Barb Wickstrand and the University of Minnesota women's soccer program for reaching out to provide a special experience for these girls. Interacting with role models from the state's only Division I soccer program cannot be overvalued. GoGirlGo is a great example of the power of sports to enrich the lives of young girls," said Kate Ryan Reiling, GoGirlGo Program Director.
GoGirlGo 2003 was made possible by the support of The McNeely Foundation (St. Paul, Minn.), Women's Sports Foundation (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Western Bank (St. Paul, Minn.).
