appearancThe University of Minnesota men's basketball program announced its 2003-04 schedule today.

The Golden Gophers' 2003-04 schedule includes five nationally televised games, including three appearances on ESPN, one on ESPN2 and one on CBS. In addition, the entire Gopher schedule will be broadcast as part of ESPN's regional or local package on Victory Sports Network. For the first time since the 2000-01 season, every Golden Gopher game will be on television.

"We're very pleased that every Golden Gopher basketball game will be seen all across Minnesota," said head coach Dan Monson. "We should have an entertaining and challenging schedule starting with the Preseason NIT, road games at Virginia and Texas Tech, and the Big Ten will be the toughest, most competitive conference in the nation again this year."

Minnesota will begin regular season play in the Preseason NIT vs. Missouri-Kansas City at Williams Arena on Nov. 17. If the Gophers win that game, they will take on the winner of the Utah vs. Georgia State game on Nov. 19 at a site to be determined. The winner of the second round game advances to New York for the semifinals and finals on Nov. 26 and 28.

The Gophers begin December in Charlottesville, Va., taking on the Virginia Cavaliers as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on ESPN2. Minnesota is 3-1 in the Challenge and 1-1 on the road. An ESPN New Year's Day game at Texas Tech highlights the beginning of the new year followed by a visit to Williams Arena by the Princeton Tigers on Jan. 10.

Minnesota begins the Big Ten slate on Jan. 7 in Happy Valley against the Nittany Lions of Penn State and its new coach Ed DeChellis. The Gophers' will appear on national television twice during the conference season. On Jan. 13, Minnesota hosts Iowa on ESPN and on Sun., Feb. 8 vs. Illinois on CBS. The Gophers finish with three of their final four games at Williams Arena, culminating with a Mar. 6 matchup vs. Penn State. The Big Ten Tournament will be played in Indianapolis, Ind., on Mar. 11-14.
