Golden Gopher Women's Basketball Defeated at Penn State

1/22/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

tIf there is a silver lining to the Golden Gophers' 75-56 loss at Penn State, it's that Minnesota's Lindsay Whalen will get to break the all-time school scoring record at home.

Whalen scored 15 points and now has 2,096 career points, trailing Carol Ann Shudlick's school record of 2,097 by one point. The Gophers' All-American guard will look to break the record on Sunday when No. 9/9 Minnesota (15-2, 4-2) plays host to No. 20/20 Michigan State.

After playing to a 34-34 halftime tie, No. 7/8 Penn State established the momentum with a 15-3 run to start the second half. The Gophers halted the Lady Lions rally and answered with a 10-0 run of their own to make it 49-47 with 9:46 left in the game.

Minnesota had a chance to tie the game in its next possession but a Whalen layup came up short. Penn State's Tanisha Wright grabbed the rebound and started a quick transition that resulted in an Amanda Brown layup on the other end.

The Gophers would close to within four points on several occasions, the last at the 4:18 mark when a Janel McCarville layup made the score 58-54. The Lady Lions then slammed the door shut allowed the Gophers just one field goal in the last four minutes, closing the game on a 17-2 run.

Penn State (14-3, 7-0) was led by Kelly Mazzante with 29 points. She became the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer, male or female, and now has 2,623 points.

The Golden Gophers suffered their worst shooting night of the season, hitting 38.5 percent from the field. McCarville was the only other Gopher in double figures with 11 points.
