Women's Hockey Takes First Game Against MSU, 3-2

threeThe No. 1 University of Minnesota women's hockey team took the first game of a two-game series against Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Minnesota State, 3-2. The Golden Gophers scored all three of their goals in the first period to improve to a 17-1-1 overall and 11-1-1 in league action.

Noelle Sutton was the first to score for the Maroon and Gold at 6:58 of the first period. Sutton scored her second power-play goal in two games and her eighth goal of the season. Danielle Ashley and Krissy Wendell set up the Gophers' 27th power-play goal of the 2003-04 season. Wendell added her 17th goal of the season at 8:01 of the first. Linemates Kelly Stephens and La Toya Clarke were credited with the assists.

Minnesota added its final tally of the game at 18:14 of the first. Kelsey Bills scored her second goal of the season. Andrea Nichols took the initial shot, while Bills batted in the rebound. BIlls' first goal of the season came in the first game of the season against Ohio State, Oct. 17.

The three goals would be all the Golden Gophers would need. MSU fought back scoring a goal in the second and the third period, but the Gophers were able to hold off the Mavericks. Shera Vis scored at 12:32 of the second, while Kearstin Solberg netted a goal at 2:58 of the third. MSU pulled senior goalie Shari Vogt with 30 seconds remaining, but were not able to score.

Jody Horak was in goal for Minnesota and collected her 13th win of the season. Horak had 16 saves in the win. Vogt had 36 saves, including 17 in the second period. She dropped to 11-6-3 this season.

Minnesota was 1-5 on the power-play taking 10 shots with the extra attacker. MSU was 0-3 and had one power-play shot. The Gophers also outshot MSU, 39-18.

Minnesota will look for the sweep tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
