Earlier this season, Maroney was named the 2003 Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the Big Ten Conference and The Sporting News. He was also an honorable-mention selection by both the coaches and the media. His 6.92-yard average per carry was the second-highest single-season average in school history, the best in the Big Ten and the best in the nation among all players with at least 100 rushing attempts. Maroney's 1,121 yards rushing in 2003 places him 11th all-time in single-season rushing yardage in school history.
The 27-member Scripps / FWAA team was selected by an 11-man committee representing each of the NCAA's Division I-A football conferences.
More than 70 players were nominated and evaluated by the committee. The vote took place following the respective conference championship games and before the bowl games. Thirteen of the 27 players selected are true freshmen, including eight on defense.
