For the second time in two nights the Golden Gophers scored just one even-strength goal, the rest coming off the special teams. Becky Wacker added her first goal of the season at 5:32 of the first period, while linemate Bobbi Ross added the assist. The Gophers added their fourth short-handed goal when Natalie Darwitz scored at 18:26 of the first. Ashley Albrecht tipped the puck with Darwitz picking it up and went one-on-one with a SCSU defender for the goal.
SCSU got on the board for the first time in the series at 7:27 of the second period when Tina Ciraulo scored on a power-play goal. The Gophers responded by tacking on two additional goals in the period. Andrea Nichols scored her first goal of the season at 9:49 of the second. Chelsey Brodt started the play and passed it to Noelle Sutton, who wound up for the shot. Sutton's shot was stopped, but Nichols added the rebound attempt. Darwitz scored her second goal of the game at 19:48 of the second, this time on the power play. Kelly Stephens and Lyndsay Wall were each credited with an assist.
The Maroon and Gold tacked on three additional goals in the third period, including two by Wall. In just :33 into the third period, Wall tacked on her third power-play goal of the season, while Krissy Wendell and Ross added the assists. Wall added her second goal at 16:17 of the third, although it didn't come without confusion. Stephens started the play passing the puck to Wendell. She passed it to Wall, who wound up for the slap shot. The inital play started with the referee calling a post, however, the red goal light was lit. After a stop in play, it was later determined that although the puck hit the pipe, it still went in and the goal was allowed. An additional :10 was added to the clock following the goal.
Nichols added her second goal of the game, this time on a short- handed attempt. Maggie Souba collected her first assist of the season, while Anya Miller earned her first assist of her Gopher career.
Jody Horak's scoreless streak ended tonight, allowing the one power- play goal. It was her first goal allowed in three games played. She finished the night with 15 saves.
Minnesota finished the night 4-for-8 on the power play, while SCSU was 1-for-11. Minnesota had 15 penalties for 30 minutes, followed by St. Cloud State with 13 for 26 minutes.
