No. 2 Volleyball Sweeps Indiana

Erin Martin (Ames, Iowa) paced Minnesota with a team-high 13 kills, along with three blocks. Lindsey Taatjes (Prinsburg, Minn.) narrowly missed her first career triple-double with nine kills, 15 assists and 14 digs. Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) also narrowly missed a triple-double with eight kills, 28 assists and 10 digs.
Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) tied a season- high with seven blocks and had nine kills on the night. Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara', Brazil) had a match-high 23 digs, while Lisa Reinhart (White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 10 for the match.
Indiana jumped out to an early 7-5 lead in game, but Minnesota scored three of the next four points to tie it at eight. The two teams exchanged the next six points to tie the score at 11. The Golden Gophers scored seven of the next nine points to take an 18-13 lead, which forced Indiana to call a time out. The Hoosiers came out of the time out with the next three points to cut the lead to 18-16. However, Minnesota answered back with three straight points of its own on the strength of a Bowman kill and a Byrnes solo block to move its lead out to 21-16.
Indiana came right back with three straight points to cut the lead back to two at 21-19. The Golden Gophers scored four of the next five points to push their lead back to 25-20. However, Indiana pushed the lead back to 25-23 with three straight points to force Minnesota call a time out. Following the time out, Indiana scored four of the next six points to the score at 27. Bowman and Bratford answered with consecutive kills to give the Golden Gophers game point at 29-27. Indiana cut the lead to 29-28, but Bratford put down a kill to finish out the game at 30-28.
Minnesota narrowly outhit Indiana .132 to .123 in the first game. The Golden Gophers also outdug the Hoosiers 29-to-24 in the game. Bowman and Byrnes each had four kills for Minnesota in the game, while Gentil had a game-high nine digs.
The Golden Gophers jumped out to an early 8-5 lead, but Indiana scored three of the next four points to cut it 9-8. Minnesota responded with four straight points to push it to 13-8, which forced the Hoosiers to call a time out. The two teams exchanged the next four points to make it 15-10, but Minnesota followed with five of the next six points to go up 20-11. Indiana scored four of the next seven points to cut the lead down to 22-15. However, that was the last point the Hoosiers would scored as Minnesota closed out the game with an 8-0 run to claim it 30-15. The 30-15 game-two victory was Minnesota's most lopsided win in a Big Ten game this season.
Minnesota outhit Indiana .436 to .075 in the second game, and had 20 kills to 10 for the Hoosiers. Martin paced the Golden Gophers with eight kills in the game.
In game three, Minnesota jumped out to a 14-9 lead, but Indiana fought back with the next four points to cut it to 14-13. The Golden Gophers scored four of the next five points to push the lead out to 18-14. Indiana answered with four of the next five points of their own to cut the lead to 19-18. Minnesota responded with five of the next seven points to move ahead 24-20. Indiana scored the next two points to cut the lead to 24-22, but Minnesota scored the next five points to set up match point at 29-22. Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) put down the kill to give the Golden Gophers the match.
Minnesota outhit Indiana .278 to .099 for the night, and had 54 kills to 40 for the Hoosiers. Minnesota also had 68 digs to 53 for Indiana, and outblocked the Hoosiers 13.0-to-8.0.
Christina Archibald led Indiana with 13 kills and 14 digs on the night. Christine Nilles also had 14 digs for the Hoosiers.
Minnesota will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to play Purdue on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m.
