Michigan Comes Back To Defeat Gophers 27-24

ove Chad Henne tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ecker with 2:10 left to give Michigan a 27-24 victory over Minnesota this afternoon in the battle for the Little Brown Jug at Michigan Stadium. Minnesota led 24-17 in the fourth quarter after a Rhys Lloyd 27-yard field goal but the Wolverines scored the final 10 points of the game and held the Gopher offense in check. Minnesota falls to 5-1, 2-1 in the Big Ten while Michigan improves to 5-1, 3-0 in the Big Ten.

Michigan took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run by Mike Hart and a 38-yard field goal by Garrett Rivas. Minnesota answered just before the end of the first quarter when Laurence Maroney ran off right tackle for an 80- yard touchdown to close within 10-7.

The Wolverines added to their lead when Henne threw a 4-yard score to Braylon Edwards with 11:36 left in the half. Minnesota answered on the ensuing drive, marking 80 yards on nine plays. Marion Barber III scored on a 19-yard touchdown run with 7:35 left in the half, closing the score to 17-14. That was the score at the half.

Minnesota attempted an onside kick to start the second half but the Wolverines recovered on their own 45. Michigan reached the Gopher 33 but Brandon Owens picked off Henne and returned it to the Michigan 47. However, the Gophers couldn't convert the turnover into points. Lloyd pinned Michigan to its own 2 on the ensuing punt. After the Wolverines were unable to advance the ball and an Adam Finley punt, the Gophers took over at the Michigan 34. Five plays later, Cupito connected with Jared Ellerson on a 26-yard scoring strike to give Minnesota its first lead at 21-17.

On the following drive, Michigan again advanced into Gopher territory but Ukee Dozier picked off Henne on a deep pass intended for Edwards.

The Gophers were only able to get one first down the remainder of the game. The Wolverines handed a gift to the Gophers at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Leon Hall dropped a punt and Amir Pinnix recovered on the Michigan 9. The Gophers were unable to get into the end zone but Lloyd booted a 27-yard field goal to give Minnesota a 24-17 lead.

Michigan went 68 yards on 10 plays on the next drive that ended with a Garrett Rivas 29-yard field goal, closing the Wolverines within 24-20 with 9:30 left.

The Gophers punted to Michigan with 3:04 left in the game and the Wolverines took over at their own 23. Henne quickly marched Michigan down the field, hitting on 5- of-6 passes on the drive, including two completions to Jason Avant.

After the Henne scoring play to Ecker, the Gophers got the ball back with 1:57 left but were unable to get a first down.

Maroney led Minnesota with 145 yards on 19 carries while Barber was held to just 41 yards on 13 carries. Cupito was 8-of-22 for 156 yards.

Henne ended the game 33-of-49 for 328 yards while Hart had 158 yards on 35 carries. Edwards had 10 receptions for 98 yards.

Minnesota travels to Michigan State next Saturday.
