WR: Minnesota wins Eight Titles at the Bison Open

The University of Minnesota wrestling team dominated the 35th annual Bison Open in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday. The Golden Gophers claimed eight of the 10 individual titles in the tournament. Minnesota had the top two placewinners in three weight classes, including a sweep of the top four spots at 133 pounds.

Senior Bobbe Lowe cruised into the finals at 125 pounds and claimed first place with an 8 -3 decision against fellow Golden Gopher Andrew Domingues. True freshman Travis Lang had a strong debut with a 4-1 record to claim third place.

One of the redshirt freshmen to compete for Minnesota was Mack Reiter at 133 pounds. Reiter pinned three straight opponents and then defeated his teammate, Manuel Rivera, by a 9-1 major decision in the championship. Rivera finished second with a 3-1 record. The Golden Gophers had all four semifinalists at 133 as redshirt freshman Jestin Hulegaard earned a 3-0 decision against true freshman Marc Mellmer in the third-place match.

Sophomore Will Holst continued the winning ways for Minnesota at 141 pounds. Holst defeated Quincy Osborn, 3-1, in the semifinals and then pinned Lucas Christianson of North Dakota State in 1:52 in the finals. Osborn finished in fourth place with a 3-2 record. True freshman Tyler Safratowich claimed fifth place with a 4-2 record.

Sophomore Danny Williams took first place at 149 pounds with a 5-0 record. He defeated teammate Juan Martinez, 5-3, in the finals. Martinez finished second with a 4-1 record. True freshman Matt Everson rebounded from a narrow 6-5 loss to Martinez in the semifinals to claim third place with a 5-1 record.

Redshirt freshman Mitch Kuhlman fell in the championship match at 157 pounds by a 6-5 decision against North Dakota State's Collin Kelly. Sophomore Jeremy Anderson, a starter at 149 pounds last season, rebounded from a loss to Kelly in the quarterfinals to claim third place with a 5-1 record.

Minnesota added another title at 165 pounds thanks to junior Matt Nagel. A starter at 157 pounds last season, Nagel had three technical falls en route to the title. He scored a 1-0 decision against NDSU's Andy Pickar in the finals. True freshman Phil Meinert finished 2-2 at 165.

Competing for the starting job at 174 with seniors Jon Duncombe and Josh McLay, redshirt freshman Gabriel Dretsch earned the individual title with a 4-0 record. A true freshman from Florida, Nick Davis earned third place with a 4-1 record.

The nation's top recruit in 2003, redshirt freshman Roger Kish crushed the competition at 184 pounds. He had a pin and three technical falls en route to the championship. Kish earned a 22-10 technical fall against Matt Hermann of NDSU in the finals.

Currently ranked second in the nation, All-American heavyweight Cole Konrad had three pins and claimed first place with a 4-0 record. He pinned Tanner Schweitzer in 2:10 in the finals.

Minnesota returns to tournament action next weekend at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb.
