WHK: Gophers Sign Top Defensive Recruit in Melanie Gagnon

GophUniversity of Minnesota head women's hockey coach Laura Halldorson has announced that St. Adolphe, Manitoba native Melanie Gagnon has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Gophers in the 2005-06 season.

Gagnon, a 5 foot, 5 inch defenseman, currently plays for the Oval X-Treme in Calgary, Alberta. In the 2003-04 season, Gagnon helped the Oval X-Treme win the 2004 National Women's Hockey League Championships. Now in her second season, she has played in two games and has tallied five assists. Gagnon played at the 2004 Esso National Championships with Team Alberta, while playing in the 2003 Canada Winter Games with Team Manitoba. She is also well known on the Canadian national scene as well. In 2003, Gagnon was named to the Canadian Under-22 team and competed in both the 2003 and 2004 Canada vs. USA Under-22 series. Gagnon was also a member of the of Canada's Under-22 Team that won the Air Canada Cup in Germany.

"We are extremely happy to sign Melanie," Halldorson said. "She was one of the top defensemen available this year and she will make an immediate impact as soon as she arrives next fall. Melanie is skilled, strong, tough, and knows the game very well. She is also an excellent student, has a great personality and will be a wonderful addition to Gopher Women's Hockey."
