SOC: Kaitlin Neary Named First-Team Academic All-District

isJunior midfielder Kaitlin Neary has been selected to the 2004 Academic All-District V First- Team, which is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). All members of the first-team will appear on the national ballot for the Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team, which will be announced on Nov. 23.

This season, Neary started 17 of 18 matches and finished fourth on the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and an assist. She scored the Golden Gophers' lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Vanderbilt, a team which finished third in the Southeastern Conference. Neary also scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win at Wisconsin-Green Bay on Oct. 10.

A native of Tacoma, Wash., Neary is a three-year starter for the Golden Gophers. She was an Academic All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and currently carries a 3.81 grade- point-average (GPA) in Psychology.

Neary becomes the sixth Golden Gopher in the history of the program to earn Academic All-District honors. She joins Rachael Roth (2002), Jennifer McElmury (1996-97), Erin Hussey (1996) and Gretchen Brandt (1995).

District V is made up of Division I Universities in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum GPA of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
