11/8/2004 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Irmen scored three goals against the Badgers, including a game-winner, and set up another for four points as Minnesota (7-2-0, 5-1-0 WCHA) took over sole possession of first place in the WCHA and extended its winning streak to five games. In a 3-2 come- from-behind victory over fifth-ranked Wisconsin last Friday at Mariucci Arena, Irmen drew an assist on teammate Ryan Potulny's game-opening goal at 14:22 of the first period and then scored the game-winner on a penalty shot at 5:28 of the third, after the Gophers entered the final 20:00 trailing 2-1. It was the first penalty shot in Mariucci Arena and was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter last Friday night.
On Saturday, Irmen scored the game's first goal at 3:25 of the first period on a power play and then had an even-strength tally at 9:27 of the second that put Minnesota up, 4-1, en route to a 4-2 win. A draft choice of the Minnesota Wild, Irmen has at least one point in every game this season and has pushed his career-long scoring streak to nine games. He is tied for second in scoring overall among WCHA players with 13 points on six goals and seven assists.
The award is the third WCHA Player of the Week honor for a Golden Gopher this season.
Third-ranked Minnesota takes a week off from competition this weekend, and returns to WCHA play on Nov. 19-20 at defending NCAA Champion Denver.
