SOC: Golden Gopher Soccer Announces its 2004 Season Awards

Senior Regina Moench, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was named the team's Offensive MVP after finishing third on the team with three goals and eight points. She also had the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Iowa on Oct. 22. A transfer from Creighton University, Moench was a three-time all-conference selection with the BlueJays and finished her collegiate career with 23 goals and 60 points in 80 matches.
Junior goalkeeper Molly Schneider, a native of Rochester, Minn., was named the team's Defensive MVP after an outstanding season. A transfer from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Schneider played every minute of every match and finished with a 1.43 goals- against-average and a .794 save percentage. Her five shutouts were the most by a Golden Gopher goalkeeper since the 2000 season.
Junior Laura Hoppe, a native of Coon Rapids, Minn., received a pair of awards. She was given the team's Ironwoman Award, as well as the Hustle Award. Freshman Amelia Kasten was named the team's Most Improved Player after making a mid-season transition from forward to defense.
Senior Mary Kasper was given the team's Rose Grimm Heart & Soul Award. Kasper, a walk- on from Forest Lake, Minn., she earned her first career point with an assist in a 1-0 win against Iowa on Oct. 22. Freshman Sara Johnson was given the team's Hustle Award. A walk-on from Maplewood, Minn., she appeared in 10 matches before suffering a season- ending injury.
Freshman Hailey McCarthy, a native of Oregon City, Ore., was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. McCarthy led a defense that lost three upperclassmen to injury.
It has also been announced that long-time Golden Gopher soccer booster, Deborah Olson, will be inducted into the Minnesota Soccer Hall of Fame. Olson has given over one million dollars to the department in support of the soccer program and women's athletics in general. The Golden Gophers' soccer facility, Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, is named in honor of Deborah's mother.
