The Gophers tacked on their first goal of the day at 10:47 of the first period. The line of Kelly Stephens, Becky Wacker and Krissy Wendell connected for their fourth goal of the weekend. Wendell started the play passing it to Wacker at center ice. Stephens was streaking through the slot when Wacker fed her the puck. The Gophers would take the one-goal lead into the first intermission. Minnesota allowed one shot on goal in the first 20 minutes of play, the least allowed by the Gophers this season.
The Maroon and Gold tallied their second goal at 15:43 of the second period. La Toya Clarke set up Wendell putting the game up, 2-0. Wendell then played the role as the set person when she connected with Wacker at 17:54 of the second. Danielle Ashley was credited with the second assist. By the end of the second period, Wendell had tallied three points.
Stacy Troumbly put on the finishes touches to the shutout when she scored her first-career goal at 16:53 mark of the third period. Wendell passed it to Wacker, who set up Troumbly in front of the net. It was Troumbly's first goal in 94 games played and her fourth career point.
Wendell posted four points in the game and leads the team with 44 tallies in 22 games played. With her four points against BSU, Wendell sits at the 99-career point mark.
Brenda Reinen was in goal for the first time since Nov. 30 when she allowed one goal in the 10-1 win against UND. It was Reinen's fifth start between the pipes, now sitting at 5-0-0. Reinen collected her second shutout of the season, while the first came Nov. 23 when she blanked Minnesota State, 4-0. Sunday's win was her first victory over the Beavers in four attempts. She holds an all-time record of 1-0-3 against BSU. Sunday's game also marked the team's second shutout of the Beavers this season. Minnesota shut down BSU in the last WCHA series on Dec. 5, 2003 in a 7-0 win.
Minnesota will compete in one of its toughest nonconference opponents of the 2003-04 season when No. 1 Dartmouth comes to town, Feb. 7-8. The Maroon and Gold and the Big Green go head-to-head at 1:05 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at Ridder Arena.
