"Brandon will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program," Denney Wright said. "He is a very talented trainer and goalkeeper coach, and he has a tremendous passion for the game."
Currently the club director of Olathe Soccer Club for the past five years, Barkus spent three years as head coach of the women's soccer team at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. Prior to taking over the women's program, he was an assistant coach for the Baker men's soccer team. Barkus was also the head coach of the Kansas Olympic Development Program from 1995-2003.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the staff at the University of Minnesota," Barkus said. "To be able to work for a Division I school in a major conference like the Big Ten is a terrific opportunity."
Barkus began his coaching career by serving as head coach of the varsity boys' soccer team at Atchison (Kansas) High School from 1995-98. He was named Kansas Coach of the Year in 1998.
Barkus was a two-time honorable mention All-American goaltender at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He was also a two-time team captain and four-year starter for the Ravens. Barkus earned a bachelor's degree in Education from Benedictine in 1995.
