Minnesota Softball Opens Georgia Tech Classic with two wins

IowThe University of Minnesota softball team (15-10) defeated the College of Charleston, 3-1, and Mercer, 8-1, in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic on Friday. The Golden Gophers will face Florida A&M and Iowa State tomorrow in pool play and open bracket play tomorrow night. The tournament features 25 teams.

Against Charleston, senior Piper Marten struck out 13 and earned her 10th complete game in as many starts this season. The Golden Gophers broke a 1-1 tie with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Against Mercer, Minnesota rallied from a one-run deficit with three second inning runs en route to an 8-1 victory. Lyn Peyer pitched the complete-game victory for Minnesota. Freshman Megan Higginbotham and senior Hailee Nanchy hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh inning. It was the first career home run for Higginbotham and the first home runs hit by Minnesota this season.
